Iceland is one of the hottest travel destinations on the planet right now with visitor numbers quadrupling since 2010. Thanks in part to ‘the Game of Thrones effect’, the country is now at the top of traveller wish-lists!

My visit to the stunning world renowned The Retreat at Blue Lagoon only reinforced why Iceland is the new travel hot spot!

As I step past the hotel entrance, huge picture windows frame a landscape of 800-year old moss-covered lava and pools of milky-blue opaque water. This has to be one of the most unique hotel vistas in the world.

And it’s the perfect place to recalibrate in a realm of relaxation and tranquillity. The Retreat’s geothermal spring completely immerses you in the healing powers of its magnificent Icelandic natural surrounds. The Moss Suite with an otherworldly perspective on the volcanic landscape is truly mesmerising. The, in water (yes, in the blue lagoon private pools) massage treatment, unlocks new vistas of wellbeing. The “hidden” steam cave was extraordinary, as were all the Spa Rituals. The Algae treatment was simply divine!

The staff (complete with hipster man buns) are calming (and charming!). As you walk through the corridors with lush carpets underfoot and cool concrete walls, you notice how the rich textures of the interior design creates a peaceful cocoon feeling before you reach your room.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to temporarily disconnect from the digital world. Lose yourself in a good book in the hotel’s cosy library, play a game of chess or dominoes with your fellow guests, or pour yourself a glass of Cognac (paying via the honesty bar, of course).

You may enjoy visiting the Art Gallery, Fitness Centre, Restaurant or Wine Cave. I’d highly recommend visiting the Yoga Centre, an amazing sound proof space with low set windows looking out over the lava covered landscape. Spending time in this special place, was something I will never forget.

You can also experience Iceland from the sky in a private helicopter; ride an ATV or Polaris buggy across black sand beaches and sprawling lava fields from extinct volcanoes.…you’re in Iceland after all! Don’t forget to go snowmobiling and riding those stunning Icelandic Horses is another incredible experience that shouldn’t be missed.

With all its earthly energy, Iceland has an almost mystical side to it. I really felt a connection to the natural world. I was humbled by the grandeur and stark beauty of the scenery. Iceland is truly a once in a lifetime experience!
